Deck Pets

We wanted to make a virtual pet for the Stream Deck, the kind you check on between everything else you are doing, and it kept growing. Deck Pets is five habitats now, each a small living world across your keys: fish, rodents, reptiles, an ant colony and a terrarium of invertebrates. Each is its own plugin, and they all play the same way.

The five Deck Pets habitats, each across ten Stream Deck keys: a fish tank with plants and a castle, a hamster cage with a wheel and a house, a desert vivarium with leopard geckos, an ant farm with tunnels and chambers, and a planted terrarium with a stick insect and a rhino beetle.

The habitats

Fish Tank

Fish swim from key to key. Feed them, keep the water clean, go from a freshwater tank to a reef, and raise fry from eggs.

Rodents

Hamsters, gerbils, mice and rats. Fill the bowl and bottle, clean a corner at a time, pet them until they are tame, and watch them run the wheel at night.

Reptiles

Geckos, snakes, a bearded dragon and a tortoise. Heat, light and humidity, feeding every few days, shedding, and eggs in an incubator.

Ant Farm

Keep a colony, not animals: a queen and her family dig their own nest across the keys, raise brood, forage, and send out nuptial flights.

Bugs & Friends

Stick insects, a millipede, isopods, a mantis, a rhino beetle, a tarantula and a jumping spider, growing by moulting.

What they all share

  • The whole deck is the habitat. Creatures move from key to key, passing behind the bezels, and settle in the middle of a key rather than between two.
  • Simulation or Casual. In Casual nobody dies. Illness is a separate switch, off unless you want it.
  • Time away is safe. While Stream Deck is closed, time runs at half speed for up to three days and cannot kill anything.
  • A status page. Press Status and the whole habitat is laid out a fact to a key, with long bars across several keys for the things that have a right range, boxed where it should be.
  • Rarity and one-offs. Every creature is Common to Legendary, and each game has named one-of-a-kind creatures you can only breed or hatch.
  • A shop and levels. Each game has its own currency to earn, a shop that grows with your level, and a second habitat to buy.
  • Every Stream Deck. Layouts for the Stream Deck, XL, Mini, Neo, + (with dials) and Mobile, and a habitat can stretch across more than one deck.
  • Private. No account, and it never goes online. Your save stays on your PC.

Price

Each habitat is its own paid plugin on the Elgato Marketplace. Fish Tank and Rodents have been submitted for approval; the other three are being played on real decks first. Their pages will link to the listings when they are up.
